I’ve known about this car for a while but didn’t know the history as reported by the seller. Will be very interesting to see how the community responds to this car, beyond that crazy spotlight on the running board.

I wonder a bit about the Westinghouse vacuum boater on the brakes? I have restored one of these and this one is incomplete. If not done correctly it will certainly affect driving safety.

I thought I was going to hate the colors from the thumbnail but looking at the larger photos they are ok. Pilot rays and spotlight need to share space in a garbage can but otherwise I like the car.

A.J., as I noted on the BAT listing, this was an A.N. "Al" Rodway car; every single car that was ever in his possession had every possible accessory light installed (your nightmare). If it hasn't been re-restored, you can instantly tell one of his cars just by looking at it. The spotlight is, in fact, a third headlight!

I just watched the video on this car. Sure is nice to see one running and driving. My own 1929 Chandler has not driven in many decades.
While the 'restoration' has held up very well I do find it interesting that the seller seems to believe that if it's on the car it must be original. It seems that previous owners have added just about any Chandler aftermarket part they could find to this car. To each their own I guess, but we should be careful in believing and sharing with the next owners what is original and what has been added to the car.
And to be clear since it was mentioned in the video that this was one of the "three high end cars that Chandler made". This is a Special Six, just two years prior this car would have been a Cleveland! This is not a Big Six, nor one of the new Eights that Chandler introduced in 1927. What this car does have is just about every option you could order in 1928, and then some.
Would have been awesome if that body was on one of the eights. It is interesting that they put it on the small chassis.
I never understood that either. On the longer 'eight' wheelbase this would have looked so much better and have fit the market so much better.

I think the owner did very well with the sale. I'm not sure everything that was mentioned about the car was accurate. There was an interesting comment about a previous collector that was known for adding accessory lights to their cars and it certainly shows on this car.
I will not get into a debate about it on a public forum as I have not seen the car personally or the supporting documentation. I am disappointed there was not much participation in the discussion on BaT from other Chandler owners. Unlike other auctions there was not enough discussion about what is correct or not on the car. I would like to have seen more input from other people who have these cars too. They could have demonstrated the mental oiling system or the Westinghouse brake booster, but none of that was brought up.
It's likely a record price for a Chandler car sold in a public auction. Rarely do we see a complete, running/driving car for sale. The next owner has a nice car to start with. I hope whoever winds up with it will join the website and contribute what they know and help us learn more about this car. While it may not be one of two as suggested in the listing it is a very rare Chandler model.
I will say this, I am even happier now that we pulled the trigger on the purchase of our 1914 Chandler Touring seven years ago.

Honestly it went for more than I expected. There seemed so little buzz around the auction until the last hour or so. So few questions from bidders about a car I am sure almost none of them had seen before this auction. I would have loved if some of the more interesting (original) features of this car were discussed, like the Westinghouse brake booster (I'll do a post just on this in the future.) or the Bowen Central Lubrication system. No-one even questioned if they worked or not!
I also would have liked more discussion about the history of the car, maybe we can dig into that with a future owner and nail down some of the facts vs the fiction.
I am really disappointed this auction did not bring more Chandler owners out of the 'woodwork' to comment on the car. You'd think there was no Chandler community compared to a listing with almost any other make of car.
In the end a few very interested bidders drove the price up and the system worked for the seller and BaT, good for them. What I love about BaT is the critical feedback and the history we learn about from the BaT community when a car is listed. I restrained myself on my comments so as to not sway the auction result having not seen the car personally or the documentation.
I really hope we learn who the new owner is and that they want to contribute to the Chandler community.
